This Halloween was not quite what we expected. I've always said that until Little B is old enough to decide what he wants to be for Halloween on his own, we will go with what he's interested in that year. Now, last year didn't count because 1) He was a baby and wasn't "into" anything but 2) it was a family costume and so he had to be a pumpkin. This year, I was stumped, he's into cars, trains, and monkeys. Now, a monkey was doable but not really his true love. Anything with wheels is his true love. But, how do you make a kid into a car or a train? So, with a little googling I found the perfect "costume." A wagon turned into a train. Now, all the pictures I could find showed Thomas but that wasn't quite what we were going for. So, Daddy B used his own creativity. Due to other things going on in our lives, this project got put off until the day before Halloween. So, this project became the first of many I'm sure, where Daddy B stayed up all night to have the perfect "present" for his little boy.
All that hard work paid off. Little B loved it! He did great going to the first few houses and hopping in and out to get his candy. We'd worked on saying trick-or-treat, but with a couple exceptions, he wouldn't tell anyone that. He did at least use his manners and say thank you. The second house we went to loved his ensemble so much that they had to take a picture of him. Which of course now I'm sitting here thinking of all the bad things with that as a social worker. But, she was a nice lady and there was nothing wrong with it. Get back on track, Momma B! Unfortunately, after the first three houses, he didn't want to ride in it, he just wanted to pull it all on his own. He didn't want anyone's help because he was the engineer and knew where to drive his train. Or so he thought! He got quite livid when we tried to convince him there were cars coming and he had to get out of the middle of the road and we tried to help him. He also decided that going up to houses was overrated because it got in the way of his mission - driving his train! People even came down their driveways to try to give him the candy, but he wanted nothing to do with it and kept trekking. Not exactly what Daddy B and I had in mind, but at least he was having fun! Except of course when we had to guide him. We finally got to a point that we had to go home because the meltdowns with assistance were bad. You can see what resulted....
No, he's not excited about candy up ahead, there was a car.
Once we got home, he did enjoy having trick-or-treaters come to the door and he liked helping Daddy B pass out the candy. All the kids oohed and aahed over him (because he is the cutest train engineer ever!) And to reward all his hard work, Momma B even gave him some candy before dinner.
All in all, a successful Halloween! It just goes to show that no matter what you expect to happen, that's unlikely but there's lots of fun still to be had!
